For the past year, I have been asking friends for a good place to eat Vietnamese food in Jakarta. I was beginning to ask myself if this was mission impossible! However I was not about to give up so quickly. A good friend of mine recommended MonViet, so I decided to give the restaurant a go and I have been back many times since.
I was lucky enough to meet the super humble owners of MonViet, Hai and Loan, who informed me that the recipes they use, have been passed down by generations in their family. This is a true Vietnamese family restaurant. I really admire their passion to source out the best and freshest possible ingredients for all the dishes they lovingly serve. You can guarantee that what you eat at MonViet, will all be highly authentic and in my opinion a taste sensation. Hai explained to me, that MonViet grow their vegetables locally, to bring you the freshest possible ingredients.
Although I love the art decor at MonViet, I often feel a little cold inside with the AC. That's why I choose to sit outside where the temperature is slightly more favorable.
The first time I ordered the Cha Gio Re, or Crispy Vietnamese Spring Rolls, I was in foodie heaven. I have since ordered these every time I visit MonViet. The spiring rolls are delightfully crispy on the outside, with an exquisite filling inside. When you drench them in the unbelievably yummy dip, which comes as an accompaniment, I'm quite sure you'll be hooked!
I've tried quite a few dished at MonViet by now. So I decided to see what the Dory Fish Cake Noodle Soup would be like. All I can say is photos don't lie! I loved the combination of the terribly tasty dory fish cake, in the light aromatic soup. It has taken me quite a few times of visiting the restaurant to try this dish, but I will definitely it order again.
I'm a huge fan of beef or chicken infused with lemongrass. I find the flavors to blend so well together and I'm always willing to try a dish containing either. The Lemongrass Chicken was indeed yummy. There is also something special about the incredibly high quality rice they use at MonViet. It will never leave you feeling like you have oven eaten. Once again, it was a good choice for me.
I've been to MonViet countless times and decided to edit my original blog post to be a little more informative. I've tried numerous dishes at this restaurant, and would also highly recommend you try the Pho Tai, 55k. Also, I would also strongly recommend the Bahn Mi Bo Nuong Sa, 54k , pictured in the photo above. The latter is an excellent choice for lunch. I just love the succulent lemongrass beef, in the amazingly crunchy baguette. I guarantee you will not regret ordering this dish!
I'm beyond happy to have found a great Vietnamese restaurant here in Jakarta. If you are looking for authentic Vietnamese cuisine, look no further! I would recommend MonViet to anyone. Enjoy guys!

When I want to find authenticity in a cuisine, I generally call upon friends who are from that particular country & ask where they like to eat. That was the case when I found Kaihomaru. It was not by chance or by searching online. First of all, I would like to stress how much I love sashimi. My love of sashimi started when i visited Sydney and really since that day, I have always enjoyed eating it. What could be better than eating copious amounts of food and knowing the food is healthy right! When I eat sashimi, I feel zero guilt and have 100% satisfaction, if of course the place serves great sashimi.
After having gained this recomendation from my Japanese friend, I decided to venture into a part of Jakarta I had never been. That area being Little Tokyo where there are an abundance of Japanese restaurants. When looking for a Japanese restaurant, I rarely look for a place with a great ambience. If you have been to Japan, you will know that you can get great food at places which do not focus on high end ambience, rather they are quite simplistic. Japanese tend to focus on the food and in my opinion rightly so.
I think the first time I tried Kaihomaru I literally died and went to heaven! So happy was I to have found a place in the city with such excellent sashimi. I was beyond happy and quite surprised at just how fresh the sashimi was. I remember that I didn't want to stop ordering! The best days to go I was told, were apparently are on Tuesdays and Fridays, this is when the fish is imported directly from the famous fish market Tsukiji in Tokyo. I would highly recommend going there on either of those days so as to guarantee freshness. Kaihomaru is not only a good choose for sashimi, I would say the tempura is without a doubt the best I have tried in Jakarta. The batter is light and the ebi is so succulent. It is always worth ordering the tempura if you go there. Also another dish which I think is excellently prepared is the agedashi tofu as shown in the photo. On the outside the tofu is crispy and the inside the tofu literally melts in your mouth.
If you are a fan of tamago I would highly recommend you try this sweet egg dish at Kaihomaru, again one of the best tamago I have tried in the city.
I could go on and on about the dishes here but mainly I will say if you want a restaurant which focuses on the quality of it's ingredients come here. If you are looking for a place with ambience please check my other reviews for recommendations.

FJL is a place I like to go when I want to relax in a nice ambience with a snack. Not somewhere I tend to go when I'm beyond hungry. That is not to say the quality of food is not good at FJL, it's just I don't tend to go there for dinner. I have this theory, there are certain places I feel are more for hanging out, of course all will serve food and drinks; some of them doing this in a way which makes you feel comfortable and always want to go back. That is FJL for me. A nice place to go if you want to have an evening in a chilled out place with a drink or two. In the photo shown I ordered the FJ burger. I remember it was the day on which I arrived back from Hong Kong and was so hungry due to being insanely greedy in Hong Kong. Usually I don't order burgers as I find them to be to heavy for my taste, but this one at FJL was perfect. I really enjoyed it and if I am suffering a hunger attack again I would definitely order again.
Like most places I like going in Jakarta, I tend to be a regular as something about what they are doing keeps me coming back. I would say if you are influenced by design as I am, you will not be disappointed coming here. The music is low, the lighting is right and they manage to make the place seem on trend even though it has been open quite a few years now. It's a great place to go for a date or with good friends to enjoy the evening.
ince I was a child, I have always had some kind of abnormal craving for a great cake! I love to see pretty cakes, of which here you will see many but more than that, I need a cake which actually tastes great too. The latter is not so easy to find. I have tried many places in the city which many people will claim to having the best Red Velect cake and so on. I was yet to be convinced by these other places offerings, maybe I'm somewhat picky. The first time I tried the orange cake at FJL I was super impressed, they got it just right but I thought maybe it was a lucky strike, surely not all of their cakes could be that good right? Wrong! I have been back on many occasions and tried at least 4 different types of cake, all being perfectly light and delicious. When I have a craving for cake I know just where to head in the city.

This evening I went to test out Din Tai Fung the chain of Chinese restaurants in Jakarta famous for it's signature xiao long baos. Din Tai Fung is the legendary dumpling restaurant which originated from Taiwan. Over the past 40 years Din Tai Fung has become an international sucess with more than 50 branches in 11 countries. As a sign of this achievement, the restaurant has earned a Michelin star for it's high standard of cuisine.
I have held Din Tai Fung in high regard ever since I visited one of their other brances in Pacific Place, SCBD, Jakarta. I appreciate the simplistic vision of this restaurant. They manage to execute each dish so well. The greeting is always friendly at each of their restaurants and dishes are prepared quickly. It's great if you don't have much time and want to grab some tasty food. The restaurant originates from Taiwan and the flavors really shine through in any dish you might try. Although many people visit to enjoy the dumplings, I prefer to experiment with the rest of the menu. Having already tried the speciality, which I would recomend if you are craving dumplings, I ventured to try something different. For someone who doesn't eat much meat, Din Tai Fung offers a wide range of dishes which are seafood and vegetarian based. They not only taste taste great but also leave you feeling satisfied. I hold a high regard for their Homemade Tofu dish which is served with 3 types Mushrooms and Kai Lan. The silky tofu combination of the mushrooms and kai lan really makes your mouth water! it's definitely one of my favorite dishes on the menu. I can also recommend ordering the Salt and Pepper Squid, the batter is perfectly light and the Squid is super fresh, just what you want it. I'm writing this review on the newest branch which recently opened at Lotte Shopping Avenue Mall in Kuningan and I have to say, I think this one is my overall favorite branch of Din Tai Fung. Somehow the dishes seem even better than at other branches in the city. It's not only the savory dishes which will entice you at Din Tai Fung, the desserts are yummy too. After a great dinner it's always nice to finish by ordering your favorite dessert. I have to tell you, I'm addicted to their take on Black Sesame Pudding. The Pudding is accompanied with delectable Mochi. This dish is delightful, perfectly light with the chewy consistency of Mochi working in harmony with the yummy Black Sesame Pudding. Having tried a number of desserts at Din Tai fung, this one was a clear winner for me. Whichever dish you order here it's always consistently good. Thats why it has been one of my go-to restaurants it the city for a long time.
Sometimes I feel lucky to have this restaurant in Jakarta, knowing that I will always get a high standard at Din Tai Fung. If you are searching for a Chinese restaurant in Jakarta ,they have quite a few branches across the city. I have lived in Jakarta for over 2 years and when all else fails me, I can always rely upon this place. In terms of the price, I think it's quite competitive in comparison to other Chinese restaurants in malls. In this category Din Tai Fung remains number one for me. As I mentioned at the beginning of this reveiw, this restaurant is the only restaurant to my knowledge which has been awarded a michelin star in Jakarta, so go and try if you haven't already! Also Din Tai Fung Arcardia branch, is now open until 1am which is good news if you like to have a late dinner like me. So see you there!

The truth is that the first time I went to Genki Sushi I wasn't expecting a lot. I went with my friend who assured me that it is a good place eat. Hmmm okay, I have to admit that all my perceptions of a standard sushi place were blown away when I first tried Genki Sushi! As always when I find something I love, I become a regular. Now I have been to Genki Sushi more times than I can remember!
So what’s not to love about this new Japanese concept restaurant in Plaza Senayan? Genki Sushi has saved my life in so many ways! I know this might sound a little dramatic. But it means that I never have to leave Senayan when I want to tuck into my favorite Japanese food. Which will probably only make sense if you live in Jakarta. If you are reading this, you will probably have figured that yes, I am one of those people that has become too lazy to move around the city!
I don't know many people in Jakarta who aren’t fans of sushi. So if you are like most people I know, I have a feeling that you are going to love Genki Sushi. So let me explain why Genki Sushi is different to other places in Jakarta. In my humble opinion, they are providing Jakarta residents, with yummy Japanese food that is as quick as say Mc D. Yes that's right. Genki Sushi is super fast and I do mean super!! You order with a tablet on your table, and all orders are placed from there. I'm personally loving this idea. Trust the Japanese to invent something so genius right?
Genki Sushi have a large selection of food. So I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to find one of your personal favorites here. I think when you come and play around with the tablet at Genki Sushi , you will be hooked. The reason I say this, is because the food arrives on the cutest little train! That alone makes you want to keep on ordering. I mean I kinda love seeing that train rushing to my table haha
Okay so I think you know how I feel about this concept. So I'll fill you in on what I ordered. I ordered the Crunchy Ebi Tempura Roll, 35k and the Tamago Nigiri, 12k. From the drink section, I ordered a Hot Ocha - Free Refill, 8k. The best thing about the tea, is that you can refill it on your table. Kinda convenient huh?
The Tamago Nigiri is super delicious! I don't know how they manage to make it so fast and so damn perfect. I love sweet egg on top of nigiri. I order this every time because as well as being delicious, it's a bargain at 12k. I'm certain that Genki Sushi are using high quality rice for their sushi. The Crunchy Ebi Tempura Roll is also totally enak! At Genki Sushi they do not short you on Ebi. With their rice being so good, you simply can't go wrong ordering from the sushi selection. Genki Sushi is not the best sushi in Jakarta, but for a quick tasty snack, you will definitely leave with a happy tummy.
Genki Sushi Plaza Senayan, is the first Genki restaurant, in the whole of Indonesia. So we are lucky that they have decided to bring their delicious food to Jakarta! If you ask me what my favorite Japanese restaurant in Senayan is, I would reply Genki Sushi! So now you know my view. All that's left, is for you to try yourselves. Happy eating guys!

I have always loved Japanese and French concepts when it comes to cafes. I just think that the two mesh well together, making for a cute contemporary design and a cool place to hangout. Last night I unexpectedly stumbled upon JJ Royal Brasserie, a relatively new restaurant/cafe to open in the city. On first glance it reminded me of certain cafes in Paris and as you walk through the seating area, there is a distinct asian touch which I think adds to the appeal. This is definitely something I haven’t seen done in Jakarta before and worth a visit if you are passing Kuningan.
JJRB focuses on european and asian cuisine. As with many of the hangouts in Jakarta, they cater across the board. As it was late in the evening, I was really looking for a place to hangout and have a drink before watching a movie. Luckily this place is open until 2am at the weekend so it seemed like the perfect choice.
When you first see the menu it seems you spend so much time gazing at the many varieties of cute coffees and cakes, or maybe that was just me! It was past 10pm when I visited and although the coffee looked tempting, I decided to save trying that for another time. What I really wanted was a fresh juice or tea. I decided on tea and was not disappointed. The mint tea came in a cute teacup just as it would in Europe. It reminded me of all those times in London having high tea. Although I had eaten earlier, I wanted to carry on reliving my high tea experience & sample one of the many dessert options. I opted for a cupcake called The Smurf, which was basically supposed to be a blueberry cupcake with a cream cheese frosting. I am sorry to say this cake did nothing for me. It didn’t really taste like blueberry or indeed anything in particular. Just a cupcake which seemed cute enough for a photo opportunity but had none of the desired taste. As a big fan of blueberry muffins, which if you get the right one is bursting with flavor, this cake in comparison was frankly disappointing. I was left thinking that it was a good thing I had eaten earlier. That isn't really a thumbs up for the patisserie, if it was good I would definitely have been coming back for more!
My verdict is that JJ Brasserie is a nice place to have a drink and it might be worth you trying the main courses, which could be better than the cake I tried. I would go again for the reasons that I enjoyed the tea and like interior design. As a final note, I should mention, that the music might not be for everyone. I am not sure if it's their policy to have a dj on playing loud commercial music but it wasn’t something I would rush back to hear. A few friends have also mentioned this was the case when they visited, also having the same opinion. I will definitely give JJ Royal Brasserie another shot in the day, I’m really interested to know how it differs to the evening.

I won’t lie, dim sum or yum cha is one of my guilty pleasures. It often crosses my mind how nice it is to go for lunch and catch up with friends over some delectable small parcels of goodness. Since I moved to Jakarta I have been frustrated at the seemingly lack of authentic dim sum. Maybe I was spoilt in the UK as we have so many great Cantonese restaurants. This however has not stopped me in my quest to find a place where I can satisfy my craving. One day while having a conversation with a friend about cuisine, my friend recommended I should try Ah Yat Abalone for dim sum. I am already a regular at the Mid Plaza Hotel where Ah Yat Abalone is located, as one of my go to Japanese restaurants is housed there. I have often wondered about trying Ah Yat when passing my Japanese place. So now armed which the recommendation from my friend it was finally time to try.
When looking for a good dim sum I generally think of super fresh ingredients for the filing and a thin skin which holds the ingredients together perfectly, neither too thick or chewy. This seems like it should not be too difficult concept, however finding a place which gets it’s right is quite a challenge!
Onto the menu at Ah Yat. I have been to this restaurant countless times! I can’t even remember how many if I’m totally honest. The first thing I like here is the chili oil. When I go for dim sum, I simply must have a good chili oil as an accompaniment for dipping my dim sum. Ah Yat do this well, which immediately gave me a good first impression. The steamed dim sum is pretty good. I usually order the prawn dumpling, scallop dumpling and spinach dumpling from the steamed selection. The seafood is all fresh, the one gripe I have, is that sometimes the skin of the dim sum is a little on the thick side but in Jakarta it’s possibly as good as you are going to get. The filling really does make up for the lack of precision with the skin. Moving on to the fried selection. I am a sucker for turnip cake and have to say the turnip cake at Ah Yat is quite similar to that I have tried in Hong Kong, although I really shouldn't think about the dim sum in Hong Kong for which I am constantly craving! The fried dishes are worth ordering, I usually order the prawns wrapped in beancurd which is always appealing. There are many more choices of which you can order. I often go for lunch alone ,so I don’t tend to order a crazy amount for myself.
The one thing that makes me wish I had discovered this restaurant earlier in my time in the city, is that that steamed egg sponge cake was on the menu. Sadly now it’s been removed. This is a cantonese favorite and can easily be found in many places in Hong Kong. Why or why did they do this! So I endeavored to find another dessert to rival the sponge cake which I missed. I tried the steamed sesame buns which I have to admit really do finish the lunch on a good note.
I really do recommend this restaurant if you are looking for good dim sum. Of course it cannot be compared to dim sum in Hong Kong, Singapore or London but so far in Jakarta it’s probably one of the best I have found.
