A couple of nights ago I went to (PIK) in North Jakarta. I’ve heard so much about PIK, mainly due to social media. I have never actually gotten around to going, mainly due to the distance from the South. If you are on Instagram as I frequently am, it’s impossible to miss all the tempting photos of desserts posted on social media websites. I was on a mission to find a Taiwanese dessert place, of which there are so many in Jakarta. The place I ended up choosing, is considered to be the king of Taiwanese desserts. By now, you will probably be familiar with the name Hong Tang.
Since I moved to Jakarta, I have become increasingly interested in trying things which are either unavailable or not popular in Europe. Taiwanese desserts definitely falls into both categories. I was very unfamiliar with things like Grass Jelly & Tapioca Pearls, which are common ingredients found in these scrumptious desserts. Being in Indonesia has exposed me to a whole different type of cuisine, and I’m so glad because I really love it.
Hong Tang originates from Taiwan and has a number of outlets in Jakarta. The one I visited was in PIK, North Jakarta. When I arrived, the restaurant was bustling with people coming for their favorite desserts. Having visited another branch of Hong Tang at Central Park Mall, I was already familiar with the number #28, which is one of the most popular desserts on the menu. I do love number #28, but wanted to try something new, so ordered the number #38. The number #38 contains Soya, Q Ball, Pearls and Ice Cream, 42k. What to say about this dessert apart from it was absolutely amazing! Maybe it even topped the infamous number #28 for me. All of the ingredients blended seamlessly together, making it one of the best desserts imaginable!
Seeing as it’s not every day I get to go to Hong Tang, I wanted to try out another dessert. I tried the number #6 from the Smashed Ice Series. This dessert contains Pudding, Mochi and Pearls, 32k. Somehow it seemed to have a distinct Indonesian flavor for me, definitely sweeter than the number #38 and reminded me of Ice Kachang. I did enjoy it, but not half as much as the number #38! Sorry to keep going on about that, but you guys definitely should try it.
The last time I visited Hong Tang, I tried their Almond Soy Milk, 23k. I have to say that I find this drink to be truly sublime. I often wished that I could wake up to a glass of this fresh milk every morning. I could not imagine a better breakfast! The Almond Milk at Hong Tang is nothing short of amazing. So much so, that after one visit it will leave me craving for more. It’s not easy to find Almond Soy Milk in South Jakarta. So I’m happy that Hong Tang are bringing this delicious healthy drink to town.
With so many amazing desserts and drinks at Hong Tang, it’s easy to see why this place has won the hearts of many Indonesians. My only hope is that Hong Tang will expand further and open a branch in Senayan. Then I’m sure it will be my go-to place for desserts!
